International Human Services Programs:

The Human Services Program offers three Programs with the Dialogue of Civilization model; Benin, Africa, Mexico and India.


Benin

Dates: May 2009

1 week in France and 3 weeks in Benin, West Africa


Group leader: Prof. Lori Gardinier

Course description: In this program students will examine West African culture and organizational responses to health, social and human rights issues. Students will develop and in-depth understanding of change efforts through service-learning, lectures, site visits and cultural exchanges. Particular attention is given to the role of international aid, and the political, social and economic conditions in which non-profit organizations operate. This Dialogue is open to students of any major!

Course credits: Eight Credit Hours -- HUSV 4866950 Intercultural Studies through Human Services (4 SH) & INTL 4938 Dialogue of Civilizations: Globalization and Social Sciences (4 SH)

Cost of program: The most significant costs associated with this program are covered by Summer tuition including airfare, housing and most meals. Students will be responsible for some local travel and some meals.

Application Process: The program is open to students of any major. Download the Dialogue of Civilizations application, enrollment form, and waiver form. Turn in the completed forms to Office of International Study Programs in 10BV.

Interview: Top candidates will be interviewed. Interviews will begin shortly after the deadline.

Mexico

Dates: July 2009
3 weeks in Mexico, 1 week in Costa Rica

Group leader(s): Prof. Lori Gardinier

Course Description: In this 4-week (8 SH program) students will examine Mexican human service interventions and organizations through service-learning, lectures, site visits and cultural exchanges. Particular attention is given to the political, social and economic conditions in which these human service organizations operate. Students will also participate in Spanish language instruction commensurate with their level, provided by the Chac-Mool Language Institute in Cuernavaca, Mexico. This Dialogue is open to students of any major!

Course Credits: Eight Credit Hours -- HS U950 Intercultural Studies through Human Services (4 SH) & IAF U938 Dialogue of Civilizations: Globalization and Social Sciences (4 SH)

Mexico

India

Dates: Fall Semester 2009

Group leader(s): Prof. Lori Gardinier and Prof. Denise Horn

In this full semester (16SH) program students will examine Indian global interventions and organizations through community programs, lectures, site visits and cultural exchanges. The first half of the program will be intensive academic preparation for students who will travel to Hubli, India to begin Global Corps Practicum training and service-learning in NGO’s.
